Before you call
Four things worth noting down. They make the first conversation quicker.
-
What it looks like
Size, color, wings or no wings. A clear phone photo beats any description.
-
Where you saw it
Kitchen, bathroom, attic, crawl space, along the foundation, out in the yard.
-
When it shows up
Daytime or after dark, and whether it started after rain or a change in weather.
-
How many
One wanderer, a steady trail, or a nest. Droppings or damage count too.
Nests tend to show up late in the season
Wasp and yellowjacket colonies keep growing through summer, so the nest under the eave you didn't notice in May can be busy by August. If you have one near a door, call before you knock it down.
